AYACUCHO

Art and Tradition: Numerous colonial churches rising majestically

The colonial city of Ayacucho, situated in the central highlands at an altitude of 2,750 meters (9,000 ft.) above sea level is one of Peru’s most picturesque cities. It is famous for its Easter procession, its 200 year old university, its numerous baroque-style churches of Moorish influence, and famous handicraft. Although Ayacucho is marked by Spanish architecture, many pre-Hispanic cultures, such as the Wari and the Chanca regional state, flourished here.
